Is there such as thing as being too organized? It’s a question I’ve been asking about these past couple weeks. As you’ve noticed, I haven’t posted for awhile. I’ve been wrestling with computer issues and then I realized I wasn’t using the same version of the inventory spreadsheet for both my businesses. Shocked!
I admit – the past couple weeks have been hectic and not organized at all. Oh, I’ve been trying to be organized. But some things just fell by the wayside and I felt flustered. I had to sit myself down and make an action plan. A plan to be better organized.
First, I had to update my knitting and crocheting inventory sheet. The new sheet actually tells me how much I have left in a certain yarn. Why didn’t I think of this sooner?
Well, first, it isn’t my sheet. I purchased this from a very organized gal over at Paper + Spark (yes, I’m giving her a plug – she will change your life. Hi Janet! https://paperandspark.com/) Anyway, I was having problems with the inventory spreadsheet I had purchased from her a few years ago. She very quickly troubleshooted it and sent it back. And said that she had updated the spreadsheet to include more information (not mine, just a new one). I was using that one for this business and loved it. Then realized the two versions weren’t the same. Silly me. And when I tried to copy and paste the data from the old spreadsheet to the new spreadsheet, I got major oops. Not Janet’s fault. Mine entirely. I’m not the best computer person out there.
So, the only way I could see out of the pickle I was in was to enter all my yarn inventory one at a time. And then enter all my completed project inventory, one at a time. I finished the yarn inventory. Still working on the finished project inventory. One entry at a time. And making sure that I’m promoting it and all the pictures are up to date. I’ve been meaning to do this for awhile (the promoting and updating pictures) and now I have an excuse and a starting point.
So, the point is, when you have a business like I do (or a couple, three, four….), there’s no such thing as being too organized. You don’t want to mess up your taxes by putting down the wrong inventory numbers. You don’t want to say something is ready to ship, a customer buys it and all of a sudden you realize you don’t have it and it needs to ship tomorrow. As a small business owner, we wear so many hats – accounting, creator, labor, social media executive, customer service. And we take care of our families. Not an easy job. But we do it and with the right tools, we can crush it like no one’s business and have all those other moms wonder “How does she do it?”
Yes, I sleep. The only performance enhancing drug I take is caffeine in the form of coffee or Dr. Pepper. I still bring my child to school and activities, work a full time job and manage to have dinner on the table (or at least in the fridge) every night. Life is good. I feel powerful and motivated to help people make the most of their lives. Am I still learning? You betcha! I am always finding new techniques and tools and trying them out. Someone out there is always going to be more organized than I am. But you know what? I learn their methods, find what works for me, and I’m catching up.
Until next time-
